celebrating national vegetarian week
or at least i’ve been trying to yet have been scuppered on a number of occasions now. what really annoys me is when you find hidden meaty things in a product you assume to be vegetarian, starting last month when i bought a smoothie that had fish oil in it… why?! all this bollocks about fish oils making you smarter i presume, a faddy gimmick evidence by M&S’ response when i contacted them...

welcome home
been doing some research on areas to live and this report came back on the ‘types’ that live on a road in meanwood, courtesy of UpMyStreet: Often, many of the people who live in this sort of postcode will be low income larger families living in semis. These are known as type 44 in the ACORN classification and 3.04% of the UK’s population live in this type…These families...

week three
this last week has been an odd one, with occasional ups and numerous downs (natch). feel like the grand old duke of york with his interminable directionless marching, trying to manage mine and someone else’s life without a map. the week started congruously enough, and then some shit went down at work and i ended up getting emotional. and then that threw me for the rest of the week. no...

the lovely eggs
http://theculturevulture.co.uk/blog/radar/the-lovely-eggs-fk-it/ was asked to do this interview a while back and jumped at the chance. have been keen to submit some proper articles for a proper blog since i rediscovered my love of writing, first with itstillytime  and then with this tumblr thingy. plus it’s nice not to be focusing on my home life for a change… see i do have other...

where's my head at?
week 2 of my practical philosophy course and the start of a lifetime of meditation and mindfulness. ommmmmm… so where am i up to on a physical and transcendental level? well i’ve been doing a lot of the ‘what would a wise person do?’ exercises recently, necessitated by finding myself surrounded both by accidental idiots and those that are willfully spiteful. it’s a...

the fun side of leprosy
saw this at work today and thought i would upload for any of you out there with hansen’s disease. published in 1965 by the Mission to Lepers, the pamphlet is designed to ‘help in the misunderstanding about leprosy’… presumably in an amusing and light-hearted manner given the randomness of the pictures. Leprosy

me in music
been doing some tinkering with the old last.fm settings and just seen this button called ‘paste my taste’. here’s what it said for me: “I’m into indie, female vocalists, electronic, lo-fi and alternative, including: Male Bonding, Caribou, Kate Bush, Acid House Kings, The Lovely Eggs, The Smiths, PJ Harvey, Yuck, Chain and the Gang, Françoiz Breut, Dum Dum Girls,...

black tuesday
already wrote this article once today and then in a moronic moment cut and pasted without saving and then *puff* it was gone. i nearly cried, well in fact i did shed a little tear and then got on with making tea. so am getting back on the old blogging horse having learnt a valuable lesson about the importance of pressing ‘save’ occasionally. i imagine there is a metaphor for life in...

vegaphobia
this article found its way on to my pc screen at work recently - hat tip to ms williams and the other diligent librarians at quarry house. i had a quick read and it pointed out something very obvious that i completely neglected to mention in a previous post so engrossed was i with developing my theory of a mass international brainwashing network intent on fooling innocent citizens of the necessity...

how to be wise
i have just this moment returned from my new intellectual/emotional/spiritual venture, namely the 10 week course in practical philosophy held at the old alcuin school in chapel allerton. for me philosophy has always been an intimidating and extremely abstract concept - it sounded difficult to get to grips with and i didn’t consider myself to have the wherewithal to apply what i would learn....

the deep blue sea - wyp
I went to watch this Terence Rattigan play at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in March and felt strangely unmoved by the story given that the subject matter is one close to my heart; I could identify with the leading lady but I didn’t feel any sympathy towards her or the main characters. I wonder why? Deep Blue Sea is not just a narration of one woman’s social and emotional state, but an exploration...
